Lifton 1 ton high tip dumper. Hydraulic Leak.

Hello All,

Apologies for my first post being a question.
I am a small plant operator, [very small scale]. I have a Kubota KX36 AND JCB Micro digger.
I also Have an ancient Lifton 1 ton high tip dumper,which has been a great servant.

I have limited mechanical knowledge,can do basic servicing,track changing etc.

The lifton dumper has started leaking,hydraulic oil from two of the hubs,one badly.

It is old, but i would prefer to keep it,as it suites my needs,and can`t lay out thousands on a new one.

If its any help it has a petter diesel, and has a rocker foot pedal controlling forward and reverse.

Any guidance on what the problem might be, would be much appreciated.

Welcome IIRC the hubs are just hydraulic drive motors (which are reliable) and not reduction boxes... have you cleaned out the muck from around them to see if its just a leaking pipe/fitting ? And if so or if not the case, can you identify exactly where the leaks are ?

I have had a quick look,i am still using it,It is a constant drip,[every ten seconds]even when not running.
the pipes leading to the motor are definately not leaking,it seems to be coming from around the disc,that is situated between the motor and the wheel hub.

I will try to get the wheel off tomorrow and have a proper look.work permitting.

Re;Lifton Dumper. Hydraulic Leak.

I got some time to investigate further, it looks like a seal in the motors.
Pictures enclosed.

All i can do is try to find some manufacturers, marks on the motors,for spares. failing that, when i have the time,take the motors off and take them to a company that specialises in hydraulic motors,and see how much the damage is!

Good to see .... (I upgraded you to a full member during my breakfast to allow you to post some pics, as new members cant do so for a certain period after joining to prevent spam) ... and the cost of repair will be directly related to how hard it is to get the units apart. You might be lucky depending how they strip and it wont cost too much .. on the other hand if they are a pig, it might be worth while just putting up with an odd drip ? .. that's just me ? everyone's different of course

Yes. i have run for a little while with the leaks,but the rear one in particular is now to much to be ignored,[leaving snail trails every where].
A couple of places i work,i will get a knock back.

As it is, i tread a fine line,constantly trying to up date old machinery,in an industry,that is very health and safety orientated .

I will be using it for the forseable,until i can get time to break it all down.

Yes I know what you are saying ... can you take a pic of the hub from the side.. cos .. if it splits from the outside, you are quids in .. those 4 bolts look quite sexily that, that might be a hub that can be stripped from the outside shaft side

Update.

Just a quick update.....well there isnt one really!

I had to work the weekend, so didnt get chance to work on it again, though i am still using it.

Will have to do it as soon as possible,as the rear one is leaving a sizeable amount in a baking dish overnight .

Yes.[although can be a nightmare,it is on an old chemical installation. i have to leave it sometimes to work on other jobs].

One other question,bit of an obvious one,[and stupid]. I don`t know what actual model it is?
With the rocker foot pedal and Lister engine,would it be a Lifton 750?
I am trying to track down some spares.

Cheers V8druid. Yes.Thanks for the reply. Hope you are right. Everythings gone a bit mad recently, as opposed to a few weeks ago,when everything was a bit quite.Hope to get this done whithin the next week or so. Will update whatever.
