My word……it’s been 12 years since I rebuilt the Mitsubishi engine on my (ex) Volvo EC15B mini digger. The whole process was documented on this very (most excellent) forum here: https://www.plantandconstruction.co....ken-again/894-
Since that rebuild the digger has performed splendidly before it was passed onto a family member back in 2020. Since then the maintenance has been err…neglected!
Doug (the Digger) stopped working just before Xmas 2024…in a puff of white smoke, hot smells etc. I got the call as there is no-one in West Cumbria our Lad could call out to fix the problems. To be fair, he never asks for help but this time it was a bridge too far….plus I’ve got you lot to help me…..hopefully.
…back to the job then:
SYMPTOMS:
1. Engine had a couple of diesel runaways.
2. Overheated
3. Erratic starting (all EC15 owners know this is the dodgy earth on the ECU under the seat usually)
4. Engine stopped working completely.
naturally, the breakdown happened outside a garage door, stopping access to the garage etc…..
In Cumbria UK it rains - a lot -
ON INSPECTION:
1. Fan belt was shredded.
2. Alternator was loose so it could never have tensioned the fan belt anyway.
3. Oil sump had 3 litres of diesel in it: captured when the oil dip-tube was removed.
4. Injection Pump was not pumping any fuel.
5. Stop Solenoid was bent.(photo).
6. Oil sensor connection was loose.
7. Air filter sensors (both) were not connected and hanging loose.
I’ll start the resuscitation in a few days but it would be interesting to hear members views…and of course…Sir Muz: Oracle of all EC15B’s
I revisited the thread from 2012: how easy it is to forget everything. I should be demoted to “Scared Fartless EC15 Tech”……
laters….
