  • Twin speed tracking,

When using my JCB 8018 yesterday I noticed when I turned on and off the twin speed tracking switch there was a slight clunk form below my feet! Today I tried slowing the tracking down but turning the switch off did nothing! Great I thought as when in high speed the tracking struggles to turn so I used to turn it off to turn but not one it seems to have plenty of power!! Ay one know what's gone wrong. In my eyes it's a kind of improvement!

The switch operates an electromagnet which sits on a shaft (depending on make) and operates a spool valve. The clunk you hear is the throw of the valve , which doubles the flow of oil (again depending on make) to the track motor to double its speed.

My rough guide to oil mechanics is

.. when twice as much oil is thrown into the motor by a constant force, (the engine) the track motor will only be able to endure half the resistive force before the power source (engine) will be overloaded .. and when such a pressure is reached in the system, the relief valve blows, sends oil back to the tank, and you get no drive.

As a rule double the speed halve the power
Please don't PM me for plant advice.. thanks .. Post in the forum where I will gladly help, as will many of our contributors.. as the info and responses will help everyone else, which is why we exist

Hi Jim, did you ever get to the bottom of this two-speed issue? Apologies if I missed it on another thread.

....and a wee story...............last June my neighbour farmer lent me his Kubota KX91-2 mini digger. I had to drive it from his farm to our place - a distance of 0.7 of a mile -.....it took AGES and AGES......plus t'was my first time in a digger.......plus he failed to let me know it had 2 speed tracking!!!
